As
the first summer school in epidemiology established in Europe
the Florence course has been attended since 1988 by over two
thousand students.
The EEPE is sponsored by the International
Epidemiological Association, the WHO Centre for Environment
and Health and the Italian Association of Epidemiology. Epidemiologists,
public health professionals, statisticians as well as clinicians
with an interest in epidemiology have appreciated the opportunity
of combining an intensive learning of epidemiological subjects
with the unique attraction for cultural and artistic enjoyment
offered by Florence and Tuscany.
This year one course of more advanced level, on "Competing
Risks Analysis",
is run in the week preceding the start - June 25 - of the
three week main course.
We gratefully acknowledge the continuous support and collaboration
over the years of the Health Authorities and the Regional
Health Agency of the Tuscany Region and the financial support
by the Compagnia di San Paolo, Turin.
Particular thanks to the Health Authorities and the Regional
Health Agency in the Tuscany Region for their continuous support
and collaboration.
We
are looking forward to welcome the participants to the 2012
EEPE courses.

Epidemiology:
A Very Short Introduction
Rodolfo Saracci
Paperback,
144 pages
Mar 2010
Description
Epidemiology plays an all-important role in many areas of medicine,
from discovering the relationship between tobacco smoking and
lung cancer, to documenting the impact of diet, the environment,
and exercise on general health, to tracking the origin and spread
of new epidemics such as Swine Flu. It is truly a vital field,
central to the health of society, but it is often poorly understood,
largely due to misrepresentations in the media. In this Very
Short Introduction , an internationally recognized authority
on epidemiology, Dr. Rodolfo Saracci, provides a wealth of information
on this key field, dispelling some of the myths surrounding
the study of epidemiology, and explaining what epidemiology
is and how vital it is to the discovery, control, and prevention
of disease in world populations. Dr. Saracci provides a general
explanation of the principles behind clinical trials, and explains
the nature of basic statistics concerning disease. He also looks
at the ethical and political issues related to obtaining and
using information concerning patients, and trials involving
placebos. |
